Arts Alive is an annual arts and crafts festival that showcases more than 100 artists and craftsmen from across the country. Artists exhibit, demonstrate, and sell their wares. They also compete for award money. The festival is sponsored by the Kennedy-Douglas Center for the Arts and it held at the Center and in Wilson Park located in Florence, Alabama. Proceeds from the festival fund the Arts-In-Education program. The Arts Alive Festival was held this past weekend and my family and I spent several hours on Saturday admiring the many arts and crafts. One of my favorite local artists, Helen Allman, had a booth set up displaying her many works of art. She had sketches, paintings, sculptures, and a lot more. She had several pieces on display in the Kennedy-Douglas Center. I didn’t get to talk with her long because she had several people waiting to get caricatures done. However she did sign the oil painting we bought. For more information check out or

I took a lot of pictures at the festival. I’m working on implementing a photo gallery to the site and I’ll update this article with the link when it’s done.

  1. Thanks for the plug, Tim, of my artwork! Im staying busy teaching art lessons and a sprinkling of birthday parties here and there. I’ve signed up to Substitute Teach in Florence again, and continue to do First Fridays. I volunteered at the Children’s Museum some, and they are letting me stock their gift shop with my artwork that is related to the museum and the Shoals area. You know, touristy type stuff that is not high priced. I will be entertaining at Mitchell Hollingsworth Nursing Home for a Birthday celebration and will be making balloon animals, playing Limbo and whatever else I can fit in in the hour they are highering me for. Fun. It was nice seeing you and your family at Arts Alive. Oh, the painting you purchased from me is Acrylic on Canvas. JFYI… Well, take care, Helen Allman
